Hi there!!! Today's story is about the Creator of the Universe, Lord Brahma, and how he became four-headed. Let's go…
P.S: As of the start of the story, Brahma has ONE head…
Ages ago, Manmatha (now known as Kamadeva), the God of Love and Desire, and his wife, Rati, did severe penance for Lord Brahma. They prayed sincerely for a special boon - they wanted a magic bow and infinite arrows. Whenever they shot someone with it, they would fall instantly in love with the nearest person (I know, that's kinda CRAZY!!!!).
They fasted and meditated for days on end. But, they didn't deter. They kept on meditating.
Months later, Brahma arrived from the clouds and stood in front of Manmatha. He asked Manmatha, " Hello, little one. You have pleased me. What do you want?" Manmatha and Rati bowed down to Brahma. They replied, "Namaste, Lord Brahma. We wish for a magic bow and unlimited arrows. The arrows should be fashioned in a way that whenever it hits someone, they will fall in love with the closest possible person." Brahma saw this as a good opportunity to boost the human race!! He thought to himself, " Eventually, humans will prevail over the world if I give Manmatha his bow and arrow." Brahma raised his right hand and proclaimed, "Thatha Astu!!!! So be it!!!!" Suddenly, in Manmatha's hands, was a bow made of sugarcane and a quiver of arrows, each with a tip made of flowers. Manmatha and Rati thanked Brahma and went on their way. Brahma flew back to heaven, floating on the fluffy clouds.
A few days later, Manmatha thought eagerly about trying out his new bow and arrow. He wanted to test how amazing Brahma had made his new love-weapon. So, he went to Brahmaloka, the abode of Brahma, and saw him creating a lady. He was sculpting a woman out of magical energies and forces. As Manmatha saw this, he hatched a plan. A heinous plan, "Hmm… Maybe I can hit Brahma with one of my arrows!!" Manmatha aimed right at Brahma's neck. It hit him right where he intended it to. BOINK!!!!! It hit Brahma and bounced off, landing on the floor. Brahma clutched his neck and exclaimed, "Who tapped my neck?" He shrugged his shoulders and continued forming the new lady. Soon, Brahma finished making the woman and named her Shatarupa or the one with a hundred forms.
As Brahma finished, the magic of Manmatha's arrow began to take effect. Brahma was completely dumbstruck by the power of Manmatha's arrow. The newly-intoxicated Brahma put his eyes on Shatarupa and immediately fell in love with her!!! (YUCK!!!!!!!!) He stared at her in awe. Shatarupa was deeply offended. She thought, "How can my own creator be staring at me like this? I don't like this!!" She ran to the side, where Bramha couldn't see her.
Suddenly, Bramha's head started to jiggle. It started to wobble. It even started to wiggle!! All of a sudden, a new head sprouted from the side of Bramha's original head!!! It gazed at Shatarupa in ecstasy. Shatarupa was shocked. Annoyed, she ran to the other side. Alas!!!! Another head grew from Bramha!!!! Shatarupa went behind Bramha. Lo!!!! Bramha popped out another head!!! Soon, Bramha had four heads, look in all directions. Shatarupa was offended. She thought, "I shall fly up!! Bramha can't sprout any more heads!!!!" So, Shatarupa flew into the sky and hovered right above Bramha. But, Bramha again sprouted another head at the top of his heads!!!!!!!! Shatarupa was livid with fury. She prayed to Lord Shiva, who was seeing the incident. He proclaimed, "This is not the right behaviour!!! Bramha is acting very rude and is going against his own thoughts!!!!!" Shiva jumped down from Mount Kailash and swung his trishula on Bramha's head facing the sky.
KKKKKCCHCHCHHHHHHAAAAAAAKKKKKKKKKKK!!!!!!!!!!!! Bramha's head fell with one clean sweep. It plopped into the hands of Shiva, who was angry. REALLY angry. He shouted at Bramha, "What is this, I say?? What, Bramha!!!! You are staring at your own creation!!!!!! What kind of behaviour is this?!?! I curse you!!! May you forever have four heads and only be worshipped in one place in the world!!!!!!" Bramha soon lost the effects of Manmatha's arrow and apologized to Shiva, "I am sorry, Shiva. My erratic behaviour had given me enough punishment. Three extra heads. Please forgive me," So, to soften the curse, Shiva proclaimed, "Even though you may not be worshipped as much as Vishnu and me, may you always be an integral part of the Holy Trinity."
There was no denying that Shiva had committed a sin by cutting of Bramha's head, therefore (sort of) killing him. As a consequence, Shiva disguised himself as a poor Brahmin and set off for Bramha Kapala (better known as Badrinath, Uttarkhand). Shiva carried Bramha's motionless head in his hands as used it as a begging bowl. But, strangely, the head would never fill up with food. No matter how much food Shiva obtained, the bowl would just never fill up!!!! Only when Shiva went to Varanasi and accepted alms from Annapoorna, the Goddes of Food and Nourishment (who was also an avatar of Lakshmi), did the bowl fill to the brim.
Thus, Bramha earned himself three new heads because of silly folly.
Fun Fact Nº 1: It is said that Bramha's fifth head has remained with Shiva ever since.
Fun Fact Nº 2: The place where this incident (supposedly) occurred was Pushkar, Rajasthan.
Fun Fact Nº 3: The Bramhaji Temple of Pushkar is the only temple in the WORLD that is dedicated to Lord Bramha. On Kartik Poornima, they host a grand Bramha festival, where thousands of people flock to pray to the idol of Lord Bramha
