Hi there!!! Today's story is about Garuda and his half-brothers, the Nagas (or Snakes). They were the sons of Kadru, whereas Garuda was born from Vinata. Today's story is also about how Garuda gave the Nagas forked tongues, which would atone for their heinous sins. Let's go…
Garuda, the son of Sage Kashyapa's wife, Vinata, had gone to get the amrut for his step-mother, Kadru. Kadru had made a wager with Vinata, which she won. She told Vinata that she would have to be her slave. Vinata was desolate. Kashyapa couldn't do anything, because he was deep in meditation. To save his mother, Garuda asked Kadru. But, she didn't want to give away her new slave. She gave him a wager - if Garuda gave her the amrut, then she would release Vinata from slavery!! But, if Garuda failed his mission, Vinata would be Kadru's slave forever. Disregarding his (real) mother's pleads, Garuda set off for Vaikunta to retrieve the amrut.
Garuda flew to Indra's court and pleaded the king of the gods, Indra, to give him the amrut. But, Indra denied. He told Garuda, "I can't give it to you. Sorry, Garuda," So, Garuda went to fight Indra for the amrut.
Soon, Indra thought that he was no match for Garuda. He ran to Lord Vishnu, who told him, " Don't worry. I shall calm down Garuda,"
Garuda soon arrived and saw that Indra had fled, but he left the amrut with Vishnu. Garuda shouted, "Give me the amrut!!!!!!" He leapt onto Vishnu and immediately started fighting him. Vishnu parried all of Garuda's punches, which were as hard as an elephant's.
Vishnu and Garuda fought for ages. They battled for days on end. Finally, they both fell down in fatigue. Vishnu wiggled up wearily and said, " Little one, I admire you. I shall grant you a boon. What do you wish for?" Garuda smiled and said, "I have fought with a valiant warrior. I shall grant you a boon first." Vishnu was joyous at Garuda's good nature. He asked, "I would like you to be my devotee and my eternal ride. In your honour, I shall be called Garuda Vahana." Garuda blessed Vishnu, then said, "O Lord, I wish to always be above you." Vishnu blessed Garuda and said, "Your photo shall be present on my chariot's flag!! It shall be called Garuda Dhwaja!!!" So, the fight ended on a happy note.
Garuda went to ask Vishnu, "O Lord, I would like to save my mother. Please allow me to take the amrut!!!!" Vishnu replied, " Okay, Garuda. You can take it. But, you shall not question my actions after that," Garuda bowed down and took the amrut to Kadru. Kadru set Vinata free and kept the amrut with her. She was elated to see that her sons and her were going to be immortal.
One day, before Kadru had started drinking the amrut, Indra had come disguised as a Brahmin to her house. He told Kadru, who was clutching the amrut in her hands, "Hello, Kadru. I see you have the amrut. Aren't you delighted?" Kadru smiled and agreed with Indra. Indra continued, "But, shouldn't your sons and you bathe before drinking it? I mean, because it is a holy drink!!"
Kadru agreed. She called her sons and told them to go and bathe, as they were going to drink the amrut. They went to bathe, and so did Kadru.
When Indra saw that Kadru and her sons had gone to bathe, he ran back to Vaikunta with the amrut. Alas!!! Indra dropped a few drops of the amrut onto the floor!!!!!!
Some of the Nagas, who had finished their bath early, couldn't find the amrut anywhere. They searched everywhere, but to no avail!!! The thought that the Brahmin had taken the amrut and run away!!!!
The Nagas were outraged!!! They searched for Indra far and wide, but to no avail. Three of the Nagas saw the droplets of amrut and lapped it up. But their tongues burnt up into cinders!!! The amrut burnt a line right through the middle of their tongues, making it look like a fork!!!!
These are the only snakes that survive till date!! Now you know how snakes got their forked tongues!!!!!!
Fun Fact Nº 1: The Nagas that had the amrut got their tongues burnt because they were not worthy of drinking it!!!
