Hi there!!! Today's story is about the fusion god, Harihara. Harihara is the fusion of Vishnu and Shiva. He is considered a double-god, being supreme for Shaivites (Shiva followers) and Vaishnavites (Vishnu followers). Harihara looks like this:
Vishnu on the left-hand side, with the blue skin, and Shiva on the right-hand side, wearing tiger skin. He is also known as Shankarnarayana or Shambhovishnu. Let's go!
Deep in a dim-lit, gloomy cave, somewhere in the thick and dense forest of Guharanya, lived one of the most treacherous demons ever - Guhasura! He was huge, with grey skin like that of an elephant. He wore golden jewels that hung from his neck and ears, which he had stolen from anxious passers-by. He had an orange and black striped tiger skin wound around his lower body, and he had the most horrendous pair of feet ever!!! He had long, chipped nails which were a gut-wrenching shade of black. Each monstrous toe of his reeked a revolting smell. Between each toe were reeking fungi, which stirred stomach-churning, off-putting sweat out of them (By now, most of you would be like this: EEWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!! BLEHH!!!!!!). He had yellow teeth and a crooked smile. His unruly, matted dreadlocks shook with each step of his gigantic feet. His eyes were a deep red, and as he roared like a lion, his eyes opened to reveal the scariest sight on Mother Earth.
Guhasura was a force to be reckoned with. No one was brave enough to go and confront him. Those who did try to stop Guhasura were never heard from again. All that remained were the skulls of those men…
Guhasura was determined to become the king of the Asuras (Aren't they all?!?), so he performed a huge penance to Goddess Shakti - an Incarnation of Parvati - to attain a crazy good boon.
He did penance for days.
Then weeks.
Then months.
Then a few years!!!
He did penance for soooo long, that he didn't realise that he had meditated for a decade!!!!!! As he was coming to the end of his penance, he shook his head in dismay, "Why haven't you come, Shakti?? Why?" He relieved himself of his posture and grabbed his sword, "If you don't grant me this boon in this life, then you shall definitely do so in my next!!!!" He brought the sword closer to his neck when goddess Shakti came flying down from heaven!! She blessed Guhasura, "Hello, Guhasura. I have been pleased with your penance. What boon do you desire?" Guhasura laughed in amazement!! He was elated!! He jumped with joy then said, "The boon I desire is that NO HUMAN, NO ANIMAL, NO ASURA NOR ANY GOD SHALL BE ABLE TO KILL ME!!!!!!" Shakti, being bound in by the laws of boon-giving, was enraged with Guhasura, but she had to give him his wish, "Thatha Astu!!!!" She flew back to her abode as Guhasura leapt in the air in ecstasy. He thought this boon made him invincible. He thought that he will become the king of Asuras in no time!!! His arrogance blinded him (Isn't it soooo cliché, that every single asura strives for one single goal??? I think so). It blinded him badly.
Meanwhile, back in the heavens, the gods saw Guhasura's state and got worried. They knew that, as they had faced many foolish asuras along the way, Guhasura would do the same as his ancestors and the ones to come: He will create an army and slaughter all of mankind. They sat at their round table together, thinking of a solution. Alas!! None of them could come up with an answer in time!!
Guhasura didn't do what was predicted by the gods - he just single-handedly went and destroyed villages. Then cities. Then entire kingdoms!!! The people of Bharat begged and beseeched the gods to help. But, the gods had to find a solution. And fast!!!!!
As Guhasura's rampage continued, Lord Vishnu had a (figurative) light bulb go DING!!! inside his mind. He ran to the other gods at the roundtable, and proclaimed, "Guhasura can't be killed by one god, but maybe two could do the job!!!! I shall be the first god to fight Guhasura!!!! What say???" The other gods agreed to Vishnu's statement. But there was just one problem: Who would be the second god??? No one was ready to take up the challenge against Guhasura.
Hours passed, but no one volunteered. They all laid in wait for anyone else to volunteer.
Suddenly, Lord Shiva jumped off the tip of Mount Kailash and landed on the roundtable. With the spirit of a hero in his voice, he shouted, "I, Kailashnatha Shiva, shall be the second god to go against Guhasura!!!!!!" The other gods clapped in his honour, as they set about getting ready for the fight against Guhasura.
Vishnu and Shiva got ready for the battle against Guhasura promptly. They fused together using their magic powers and formed the ULTIMATE GOD!!!!!! Harihara!!!!! He was half-Vishnu and half-Shiva, being double in strength and double in power. They were ready to fight the horrid demon Guhasura.
As they descended to Guhasura's dark cave, they saw the remnants of the warriors before them. They shuddered in fear, and carried on into the cave.
Soon, they saw him. Lumbering, nooo, TOWERING above Harihara, Guhasura roared at the double-god. Guhasura shouted, "I WILL EAT YOU ALIVE!!!!!!!!! RAAAAAAAAR!!!!!!!!" With a swing of his Sudarshan Chakra and a fling of the Trishula, Harihara easily vanquished the terrorising demon, Guhasura. Peace was restored to the entire country at last.
Thus, Guhasura was slaughtered by Harihara
